Mud Cake exists because the calculations teams actually need live in spreadsheets, SQL scripts, and documents, and turning them into trustworthy, repeatable workflows has always been too manual, too ad hoc, and too hard to govern.
Business calculations live in Excel files, SQL scripts, manually assembled exports, and person-dependent processes. The logic works, but it is not repeatable, not governed, and does not scale when teams or data grow. Every month, someone rebuilds the same calculation from scratch, with no version, no audit trail, and no way to know what changed.
Mud Cake replaces that loop with a governed platform. Bring in data from spreadsheets, SQL tables, or extracted documents. Organize it as datasets. Build transformations without writing SQL. Produce calculated datasets that can feed additional workflows. Schedule everything and chain downstream automatically, with full lineage and tenant isolation throughout.
Every step is tenant-scoped and auditable. The backend, not the UI, is the security boundary. Users never author SQL, and cross-tenant access is prohibited, not merely discouraged. That is the product we wanted to use, so we built it.
What we believe
Calculated datasets are the asset.
Data is the input; calculated datasets are what teams reuse. The product centers the dataset, its schema, storage, lineage, and lifecycle.
Governance is enforced, not promised.
Tenant isolation and authorization live in the backend. UI filtering improves UX; it is never the security boundary.
No arbitrary SQL, ever.
Trusted backend code generates SQL from validated identifiers and injects tenant predicates. This is a boundary, not a limitation we'll quietly remove.
Repeatable beats ad hoc.
Transformations are versioned, validated, and runnable on demand or on schedule, and a successful run durably chains downstream.
Fail closed.
When something is ambiguous, ownership, finalization, a stale confirmation, Mud Cake fails closed rather than guessing. A typed error beats a silent fallback, every time.
